Checkout Upsell Is Not the Same as Adding an Agent

When people hear "AI and travel", they think of chat. A traveler types a question, an agent answers, a booking may follow. That is one way to sell activities, and it works well. But it is not the only way, and for many businesses it is not the biggest.
The other way is to add the activities vertical directly to the purchase flow you already run. No chat, no new screen to learn: just a relevant offer, in the right place, at the right moment.
Two different jobs
| Agent | Checkout upsell | |
|---|---|---|
| Who starts it | The traveler asks | Your flow makes the offer |
| Interface | Conversation | Cards, banners and buttons in your own UI |
| Reach | Travelers who open the chat | Every traveler who reaches checkout |
| Context | Typed by the traveler | Already known: destination, dates, party size |
| Best for | Discovery and questions | Converting travelers who are already buying |
Both use the same catalog and the same live data. They solve different problems.
Why checkout is such a strong moment
A traveler who has just bought a flight, a room or a train ticket has made a commitment. The destination and dates are fixed, and the next question, "what will I do there?", is wide open. You already know where they are going, when and with how many people, so you don't need them to describe it. You can simply show them something good.
That is the difference between asking a traveler to look for activities and putting the right activity in front of them.
What you can offer
- Tickets and attractions at the destination
- Tours and activities, ranked by quality
- Shore excursions, in cruise purchase flows
- Airport and hotel transfers, in flight, hotel, rail and package flows
What it takes
A checkout upsell uses the TourScanner API directly: search for activities, check live availability, then book through the hold-and-confirm pipeline with Stripe checkout built in. One integration gives you more than 1,000,000 activities, in 11 languages, and you set the retail price.
Use both
The two approaches complement each other. The checkout upsell captures the traveler who is buying right now. The agent serves the traveler who wants to explore and ask questions. If you can only start with one, start with the upsell: it needs no new behavior from your customers.
